  • SECOND CAST DRAWING

Objective: to shift the drawing approach to a more painterly one.

Using a toned ground and applying lights with a variety of chalks, the form is built up in a manner that prepares the student for their first painting of the cast and at the same time demonstrates another beautiful quality of drawing.
    FREEHAND CAST DRAWING

Objective: to develop drawing skills independent from pure sight-size training.

At this point, each student will draw from a different cast using a traditional freehand approach as a balance to previous sight-size work. Elements of drawing, such as contour, graining, and hatching, will be emphasized over literal tonal rendering.
    CAST PAINTING

Objective: to learn the technical possibilities of a limited palette and its application to the rendering of form in oil paint.

This level has two stages: the first cast painting will be completed with a basic warm/cool system of color. The second cast painting will progress to the use of the traditional dead color palette to familiarize each student with the maximum range of this scale before adapting it to grisaille underpainting.
    MASTER COPIES

Objective: to study different languages of draftsmanship from the history of art.

One or more actual size reproductions of a master drawing is assigned to be carefully copied with various elements of drawing principles emphasized. These studies are meant to intensify observation of masterworks as well as inform and influence techniques used in evening life classes.
